RANGE OF EXPERIENCE

Matthew is a member of the criminal law, personal injury law and employment law teams.  His criminal practice involves prosecuting and defending a wide range of criminal matters primarily in the Crown Court but also in the Magistrates’ Court.  He appears regularly in the county court on behalf of both claimants and defendants and undertakes advisory work. He is also developing a practice in employment law and has experience both in advisory work and at the Employment Tribunal.

Matthew is qualified under the Bar's Direct Public Access Scheme.

CAREER PATH

Matthew was called to the bar in July 2006.  He joined 13 KBW as a pupil in October 2006 and became a tenant in October 2007. 

POFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCE

Criminal practice:

The early days of Matthew’s practice were spent primarily in the Magistrates’ Courts where he gained experience of all aspects of defending and prosecuting criminal matters.

Whilst still a pupil he successfully represented one of ten Defendants who had been prosecuted in a 20 day trial under sections 12 and 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 in relation to their behaviour at an animal rights protest. 

Following this he gained considerable experience prosecuting summary trials and in October 2007 spent a month on a mini-secondment at the Reading CPS.

The majority of Matthew’s criminal work is now in the Crown Court where his work is a fairly even mix of prosecuting and defending. 

Recent instructions include: 

  • Defending an importation of over 2 KG of cocaine;
  • Defending a three handed affray;
  • Defending a four handed s. 47;
  • Defending a two handed s. 18;
  • Prosecuting a s. 18;
  • Prosecution of false imprisonment;
  • Prosecution an indecent exposure;
  • Prosecuting an indecent images;

As well as acting on behalf of the CPS Matthew prosecutes for the Thames Valley Probation Service, the Department for Work and Pensions, the Child Support Agency and Lewisham Borough Council. 

Matthew also has particular expertise in road traffic matters ranging from dangerous driving trials in the Crown Court to special reasons and exceptional hardship arguments in the Magistrates’ Court.

Civil: 

Matthew advises and appears in personal injury and credit hire claims.  His personal injury practice includes employers’, highway and occupiers’ liability.  He accepts work under conditional fee agreements. 

Matthew also has experience of various licensing and Police Property Act matters.  

Employment:

Matthew first gained experience acting as a volunteer for the Free Representation Unit. He has since built on this and now advises and appears for both claimants and respondents. Recent instructions have included claims for unlawful deduction of wages and unfair dismissal. He accepts instructions in all areas of employment law.
