Jane enjoys a busy criminal practice.  Her experience includes being briefed to represent a 13 year old charged with murder after 2 years in practice and being briefed as sole Counsel in bank frauds, a 3 week drugs conspiracy, multi-handed prosecutions and defence trials, section 18 assaults, armed robberies, kidnaps, arson with intent, rapes and serious sexual assaults.

Jane has represented high profile clients and is exceptionally good with young and more vulnerable clients, and those whose first language is not English.  She has particular expertise in Sexual Offences Prevention Orders.

She is regularly led in cases and is noted for her ability: to manage large amounts of information and documents; quickly assimilate facts and figures; her attention to detail and thorough preparation; clear and concise drafting of skeleton arguments and submissions.

Jane has worked for Customs and excise, the Health and Safety Executive and the Post Office.  She has conducted complex confiscation hearings with success for both the Prosecution and Defence, due to her accounts expertise.  She has appeared successfully at the Court of Appeal.

Notable Cases

Defence

R v Samwell and others in 2003.  Originally briefed alone to represent a 13 year old charged with murder, after 2 years in practice.

Led in:  
R v Holmes and others in 2007/8.  Animal rights protestor charged with conspiracy to blackmail - 3 month trial in 2008.  Case of high public interest. Only Defendant to be acquitted by the jury.
R v Khan and others in 2004/5.  3 month conspiracy to defraud RBS involving 8 defendants where a successful half time submission was made and the Defendant acquitted of all counts;
R v Lambert and others in 2003.  Car ringing conspiracy where, following negotiations with the Prosecution on the evidence, the Defendant who was first on the Indictment, pleaded guilty to substantive offences;
R v Megson and others in 2003.  Conspiracy to burgle involving 14 defendants; represented 2nd defendant on the Indictment and an acceptable basis of plea was negotiated.

Crown

Briefed alone in 2 bank frauds which both resulted in guilty pleas:
R v Johnson in 2003. 6 counts of theft and 37 TICs totaling over £150,000 by a Bank's student advisor;
R v Sabir and others in 2003.  Conspiracy to defraud 2 banks; liaised with Officer in the Case prior to charge.

Led in:
R v Matharu in 2006.  Honour killing involving complex and conflicting psychiatric evidence relating to 'Othello syndrome' or pathological jealousy; a case which attracted a lot of media interest.  Jury convicted of murder in just over an hour;
R v Bannister and others in 2007.  Armed robbery involving 4 defendants with complex legal arguments on Identification, voice recognition, bad character, PII and surveillance evidence.  1 defendant pleaded guilty and 2 were convicted after trial;
Operation Casino in 2004.  Conspiracy to steal from trailer parks with 8 defendants; pleas taken from all on day of trial, including some to conspiracy.
