Steve Molloy

Steve was called to the Bar in 2008, and became a tenant in Chambers in 2010.  He has a very busy practice in criminal law but also undertakes some civil work.

Steve appears in the Crown Court, Magistrates’ Court and Youth Court on a regular basis.  He has experience in prosecuting and defending across the spectrum of offences.  He has also appeared before the Court of Appeal, Summary Appeal Court, Court Martial and the Parole Board.  His robust cross-examination at first instance was noted by the Court of Appeal in the case of R v. Cooper [2009] EWCA Crim 2646; [2009] M.H.L.R. 350.

Steve has particular experience in dealing with clients and witnesses with disabilities and other special needs.  He has been commended by solicitors in the past for his friendly and sensitive approach.

Recent instructions include:

  • Successful defence to alleged two-handed s.47 ABH against prison officers (jury trial).
  • Successful defence to dangerous driving in local high-profile M40 coach crash case (jury trial).
  • Successful prosecution of high profile 24 count "SP£ND" graffiti criminal damage case.
  • Successful defence in possession of offensive weapon (jury trial).
  • Successful prosecution of street robbery (jury trial).
  • Successful defence in a section 112(1A) benefit fraud in which no-one had noticed the defendant’s issues with literacy.
  • Successful defence in a robbery where great efforts had to be made to obtain disclosure of a piece of evidence which ultimately proved to be the key to the case (jury trial).
  • Successful defence in a section 172 failure to identify, in a situation where there were only two possible drivers.
  • Successful finding of "genuine emergency" at a Special Reasons hearing concerning a young woman who drove to escape from harassment by a drunken man.
  • Successful "exceptional hardship" driving appeal for a practising solicitor.
  • Successful submission of Special Reasons involving migraine induced gastric stasis.
  • Successful submission of exceptional hardship for a quadruple-amputee driver.

Steve has had considerable success in defending numerous assault and ABH cases where the issue has been self-defence, including successful submissions of no case to answer.

Steve is also developing a practice in regulatory work and has been instructed by a number of Local Authorities in the Thames Valley area as well as by private clients.

Steve has a lifelong passion for travel and is willing to undertake work anywhere in the jurisdiction, even at short notice.
